How slutty are the characters in 'Friends' ? Now there are plenty of 'Friends' guides out their on the internet. And fan sites, and clips to download, and forums that talk about it, but never before had I found a page which detailed - "How many people have the character has sex with". It started when I watched an early episode and Ross reveals that Carol (his first wife) was the only woman that he'd ever slept with., and then in episode 218 - "The one where Dr. Ramoray Dies" there's a whole scene where both Monica and Rachel talk about the number of guys they've been with. Monica doesn't actually reveal, Rachel does - but both of the guy characters (Richard and Ross) in those scenes reveal they've only slept with two women. So does this make the girls sluttier than the boys? Let's have a count ... and yes, I'm well aware that it's just a TV programme, but you've read this far and found it amusing enough, so I suspect you're going to keep going ... Note: Wikipedia has a list of 'Significant others of friends' which lists the major relationships that the characters have, but not all of them listed did the characters have sex with. Also, it only lists people that were IN the series. The list below also recounts people that they have previously had sex with (e.g Rachel talking about having sex at college in freshman year) I should also point out that I'm not counting/recording the number of women Joey is meant to have hooked up with in the series. It'd take too long to count ...
Ross starts out in Season 1 having only ever slept with one woman - his wife Carol (1).
In the third episode he reveals that he's been with Carol for 7 years - he lost his virginity when he was 19. Susan was played by a different character in the first episode that we see her, before then being regularly played by someone else. Season 2 After spending most of Season 1 lusting after Rachel (unsuccesfully) , he starts to date Julie (2) at the beginning of Season 2 - just as Rachel found about Ross and decided that she had feelings for him too. Rachel goes to meet Ross at the airport to declare that she has feelings for him too only for Ross to turn up with his new girlfriend. Rachel then spends several episodes trying to split them up, before moving on and 'moving on' from Ross by going on other dates. Rachel tries a few tricks to prevent Ross and Julie staying together, and eventually in "The one where Ross and Rachel, you know ..." they do get together. Thus begins one of the most famous "on off / will they, won't they?" relationships in modern television history. Season 3 In Season 3, Ross & Rachel famously break up over Ross's jealousy for Mark who Rachel works with, and that they should "Take a break". This becomes a running catch phrase for the rest of the run of series. Rachel regrets it and wants to get back together immediately, but Ross goes straight out that night and hooks up with the 'Xerox copier girl' Chloe (4). He's far too honest - he tells Rachel, and she decides they can never be together again. At the end of season 3 though, Phoebe hooks up Ross with one of her friends - Bonnie (5). She used to shave her head, and Rachel thinks she still does, and gives her 'approval' for the relationship. Only to find out that she now has a full head of hear and is quite gorgeous. In a moment of evil, Rachel convinces Bonnie to shave her head again to get at Ross. And right at the end of Season 3 is a cliffhanger where you don't know if Ross is going to carry on with Bonnie, or go back to Rachel who now likes him again.
In Season 4, he meets up and instantly has a thing with Emily (6). Rachel inadvertantly set them up together, as she is the neice of her boss at work. Again she is jealous - she doesn't want to 'have' Ross, and yet she doesn't want anyone else to have him either. All too quicky an intense relationship develops between Ross and Emily, and within a few episodes they decide to get married - even though Emily is from England. This sends Rachel into turmoil who decides that she can't go to the wedding in London. But come the double-episode special "The one in London", she realised that she DOES need to tell Ross that she still has feelings for him, and races off to London to see him at the last moment. She gets to the wedding, confuses Ross who - for the cliffhanger at the end of Season 4 - utters the immortal like "Take thee Rachel" in the middle of his wedding to Emily. At the beginning of Season 5, attempts to reconcile are made, but they do not work out and Ross has his second failed marriage. Season 5 Ross doesn't appear to get his end away at all during this season. His right arm muscle looks good though. Season 6 At the start of this season, Ross gets together with Janice (7) - yes - that Janice for just one night when he hears the news of Emily geting remarried. Ross starts talking to her about his woes and it turns out they have a lot in common. Everyone else is worried about him and where he is as he doesn't come home, until the next morning when he does arrive ... with Janice in tow! Later in the same episode though, Janice dumps Ross for being 'Too whiney'. Ross suddenly realises how bad he must be when Janice finds someone else 'whiney' ! As Janice walks away she bumps into Joey, commenting that there's "Just one to go now..." which stirs a look of fear over Joey's face.
Season 7 During this run, Monica/Chandler/Ross have an epsisode where they give away each others secrets and Ross says that Chandler slept with the cleaning lady at college, "But that was you!" says Chandler, and Ross admits that it was (9). This of course does not fit in with Ross previous saying he'd only been with Susan before Rachel. In "The one with the engagement picture", Ross dates a woman (10) who is breaking up with her husband. Phoebe then dates this guy, and Ross and Phoebe end up arguing defending their new partners/shags.
This spills over into Season 10, when Ross does hook up with her and Joey with Rachel, but neither of them tell each other at first. Evntually though, Ross's relationship with Joey initially dates here, but Ross ends up with her at the beginning of Season 10. They eventually split though when Charlie meets up with her ex-boyfriend and realises that she still likes him. Ross then gets no action until right at the end, where Rachel is leaving for Paris and she has one more night with Ross as a 'goodbye' present. Except then of course she gets off the plane at the last moment, and they hook up - everything wrapped up nicely in the last epsiode. ROSS'S FINAL TALLY - 13
In Season 1, Rachel has obviously been with Barry (1) the guys that she jilts at the altar - hence why she turns up in the first wedding in her wedding dress having just come from the church. Monica refers to an ex boyfriend of Rachels from college (2) - xx deMarco, although Rachel fails to mention this to Ross when reeling of her list in episode 218. Rachel then goes on to date Paulo (3), oblivious to the fact that Ross is lusting after her, Ross thus dislikes Paulo. When she splits with him (because he tries to hit on Phoebe), she then goes back and has a quicky with Barry on his dentists chair for old times sake. She also refers to Pete Carney (4) "Pete the weeper" from college that cried every time they had sex. In the epsiode where Rachel/Monica 'swap' names, Monica - pretending to be Rachel - tells Rachels dad that she (Rachel) has sex with Jimmy Dreskin (5) on his bed in her freshman year. In "The one with the candy hearts", the three girls burn things on valentines day that belonged to previous boyfriends. Rachel chucks into the pile "Adam Ridder's Boxer Shorts" (6), which I can assume she has because she's slept with him. So Rachel's up to 6, and we're still in Season 1 . . . Season 2 In Season 2 she alludes to sleeping with Stevie Fishers dad (7) whom she used to babysit for. Eventually though Rachel and Ross (8) do get together, after the classic "Over me, when were you under me?" conversation, they kiss. Then they 'split' when Rachel discovers a list which Ross has made comparing her and Julie, but they kiss & get together in 'The one with the prom video' and Phoebe proclaims "See! She's your lobster". They eventually have sex for the first time in "The one where Ross & Rachel, you know..." Season 3 They split in Season 3 though after the famous "We we on a break" line. Rachel's next shag is then with Josh (9) whom she meets through work. Season 4 Season 5 Season 6 In Season 6 she gets together with Elizabeth's dad (10) (played by Bruce Wills) who she eventually dumps because he cries too much when she got personal information out of him. Season 7 Season 7 sees her dating Tag (11) - a guy she picked on purpose to be her new assistant at work, just so that she could date him. Interestingly, when Monica asked Rachel if she did it with him on their first night out, Rachel says "Oh come on Monica, you know I don't sleep with guys on the first date", but Monica immediately retorts with the names "Matt Wire, Mark Lynne, Ben Wyeths", "Any more!" shouts back Rachel ... but too late, that's three more names (12) (13) (14) added to her list. She gives birth to Ross's baby at the end of Season 8, but they still don't get back together all through Season 9, and only in the very last episode - at the end of season 10 - do they become an item again. She actually dates Joey at one point, but it all goes all weird when they try and have sex, and so they never do it. RACHEL'S FINAL TALLY - 14
Season 1 In the very first episode Monica dates Paul 'The Wine Guy' (1) and has sex with him after he tells the lie that he is unable to perform in bed since he split two years ago. This turns out just to be something he says to get women to sleep with him. Monica then alludes to her previous boyfriend (2), who she shredded his favourite towel to get her back at him for dumping her. She then dates a guy called Alan (3) who she eventually dumps even though the rest of the gang like him, but at the same time also refers to her previous boyfriend 'Steve' who has a slur/lisp - but I'm going to be kind and assume that this is the same guy who's towel she shredded. She also dated Jason Hurley (4) - see Phoebe, below. We also meet 'Fun Bobby' (5) an ex-boyfriend of Monicas who actually turns up all depressed at a party. To counter Rachels mention of 'Pete the weeper' Monica refers to "Howard the I WIN! guy" (6), who used to say that every time he orgasmed. In two months that Monica dated him, she never orgasmed. She then sleeps with Ethan (7) who lies about his age. Trouble is - Monica lies about here age too and they both think they are 22 when in fact he's 17 and she's 26, a nine year grap freaks her out. It was his first time too. Monica has a picture of "Scotty Jered naked!" (the joke being he's got such a hairy just it looks like he's partially clothed). Again, naked picture of boyfriend = She slept with, so that's got Monica up to (8) And that's just Season 1 ...
Monica meets Richard Burke (9) a friend of her father, and thus happens to be 21 years older than her. They're both intitial retiscent about a realationship with such an age gap, but go for it anyway - but keep it secret from Monica's parents until they find out as her fathers birthday. Amusingly, in "The one where Doctor Ramoray dies" they end up having a discussion about how many people they've slept with. Richard is on two (his wife, but you do not get to find out Monica's tally. But this prompts Ross & Rachel to have the same conversation, where Ross (as we know) is also on two (Rachel and Susan), whilst Rachel mentions Billy Dreskin, Pete Carney, Barry and Paulo. Which matches up with what we have here - save for two names - xx deMarco, and Stevie Fishers dad whom she admits to tell Ross. Monica dates Richard for the whole of season 2 (they break up at the end because he does not want to have children) and thus does not add further to her tally this season. Season 3 In Season 3, it takes her a while to get over Richard, before she eventually sleeps with Julio (10) at the diner where she works. She dumps him when he writes a poem describing all American woman as 'empty'. She hooks up briefly with Richard again 'The one where Monica and Richard are just friends', and has sex a few times before realising that nothing has changed and so it goes nowhere.
Season 4 In Season 4, Monica doesn't appear to hook up with anyone! Season 5 IN Season 5, and Monica & Chandler (12) get together at Ross & Emily's wedding in London, but keep it secret from everyone else. No one knows that they are an item until Joey findout several epsidoes in, then Rachel, and then it all comes out. They eventually get married, and thus don't sleep with anyone else for the rest of the run of programmes. However, in "The one with all the Kips", it's revealed that Monica dated Kip (13) for a while - long enough it is inferred to have slept with him. Season 7 But in Season 7, she gets to go to the wedding of her cousin - as Ross's guest as she isn't invited - the reason being is that she 'knows' the groom, Stuart (14), thus adding one more to her count. MONICA'S FINAL TALLY - 14
Janice (1) first appeats in an epsiode where Chandler is trying to break up with her - with Phoebe's help (see below). In the next epsdoe he has a few brief encounters with Aurora (2), an Italian woman who is seeing several people as well as Chandler. He then dates a girl called Nina (3) at his work who is supposed to fire, but doesn't so that he can go out with her. Season 2 Chandler's shag-tally starts in "The one where Heckles dies" where he's just finished a reationshop with Joan (4) because 'Her nostrils are too big'. Turns out that Chandler has a thing about turning down women for strange reasons like this. He then gets a wrong numbered phonecall from Jade (5) - a woman looking for Bob - who Chandler has sex with.
Season 3 ... He briefly gets back together with Janice for a few episodes Season 4 In "The one with the cuffs" he meets Rachel's boss - Joanna (6) - who he dated but nothing happened in Season 3. This time though he sleeps with her and ends up being handcuffed to her chair in her office. Rachel makes Chandler end it, and promises to spread endearing comments about the size of his manhood. At the end of the episode Rachel discovers Joanna hand cuffed to the chair where Chandler has got his revenge. Then he dates Kathy (7) - previous Joeys girlfriend who Chandler gets on better with and 'steals' off of Joey. I always found this hypocritical because Joey changes women as often as people change their underwear, so quite why he got so hooked on Kathy we'll never know. Joey makes Chandler serve pennance by sitting in a box ("The one with Chandler in a box"), but a few episodes later Kathy sleeps with someone else anyway and ends it with Chander. At the end of Season 4 though whilst they're all in London for Ross's wedding to Emily, Monica (8) gets drunk and ends up hooking up with Chandler. Much later though it's revealed that she was originally looking for Joey! This starts a relationship between Monica and Chandler though (which they attempt to keep secret for most of Season 5), before they themselves get married in Season 8. CHANDLER'S FINAL TALLY - 8
Season 1 Reveals that she slept with Jason Hurley (1), just a few hours after Monica had broken up with him. In the same epsiode that Chandler is trying to break up with Janice, Phoebe helps him as she also breaks up with her relationship with a guy called Tony (2). Phoebe then meets David (3) 'The Scientist guy' for the first time in this series and has a relationship with him before he heads off to Minsk .. he'll be back later in season 9. She also dates Roger (4) the psychaiatrist for one episode who analyses everyone to death, so that in the end they all (including Phoebe) "Hate that guy", and we never see or him from him again. Season 2 Phoebe dates a guy called Scott (5) in "The one ... " but you never see him. She talks to Joey though about the problem that they haven't had sex yet. By the end of the episode though Scott has got Phoebe to think it's ok for him to sleep with her on a casual basis, and never have to call her. "This man is my GOD!" proclaims Joey. In 'The one where Eddie won't go', Rachel reveals in a shocking moment that Phoebe slept with Jason Hurley an hour after Monica broke up with him, but that was already revealed in Series 1. Phoebe's friend Ryan the submarine guy (6) turns up in 'The one with the Chicken pox'. She's slept with him before and is planning two weeks with him again. Season 3 Phoebe's first shag of the new season is when she goes upstairs to complain about the noisy neighbour, but ends up having a date with him and having sex with him (7) ... because Monica and Rachel are downstairs and are able to hear it! We never get to know his name, but it ends quickly when they all hear him having sex with someone else - not Phoebe. Season 4 In Season 4, she dates two guys in the same epsiode - Jason a burly fireman, and Vince and more in-touch-with-his-feelings kind of guy and she plays the field unable to decide between the two of them. At the end of the episode though, it's revealed that she had had sex with with Vince (8) but not Jason. She breaks up with them both. Season 5 In Season 5, Phoebe find a cop badge in Central Perk. Instead of handing it in, she gets off on the power of pretending to be a cop - only to try and use it on the cop Gary (9) who's badge it is! Instead of arresting her though, he flirts with her and they start dating. This lasts for several epsiodes and eventually they move intogether. It goes badly wrong though on the first morning that they wake up toegether, and Gary shoots a noisy bird with his gun. In "The one with all the kips" she also talks about wrapping herself nice a warm around Phil Huntely (10). "Remember Phil Huntley?" she giggled to Monica "He was fun!". Inferring perhaps that Monica dabbled with him too, but we'll give a count just to Phoebe here. Season 6 In Season 7, she's having an affair with a guy that keeps pigeons (11). Or rather "Secret affair!" as she puts it as Rachel gives the game away. She then admits to having recently gone out on a date, that was in fact "Just friends who meet up now and then, and you know .. have sex". (12) In "The one with the engagement picture", Phoebe dates a guy (13) who is breaking up with his wife. Ross then dates this woman, and Ross and Phoebe end up arguing defending their new partners/shags. Season 8 In Season 8, she goes with Parker (Alec Baldwin) (14). Parker gets exicted about the tinest of things, and is unable to keep quiet or sit still for more than a couple of seconds. The other friends take the piss about Parker behind her back although she eventually she finds out and is upset. She realises later though herself that he is too much for her and ends it. Season 9
During dating, David (The Scientist Guy) turns back up again and almost throws a spanner in the works, but she stays with Mike. Then they split up again, but get back together again and Mike moves in with Phoebe. PHOEBE'S FINAL TALLY - 15
In conclusion ... So who is the sluttiest Friend? Well, technially it's Joey but we wern't counting him in our final tally. Chandler always gives the impression that he has no luck with women, but yet actually 'scores' quite nicely. I think a lot of people do this ... they give the impression that they rarely get any -but really that's just a a flity way to 'get some' ! From durex.com, the average number of sexual partners around the world is 10.5 people. More than a quarter of people though have only slept with one person whilst one fifth have had the sex with more than 10 people. Men's average is 12.4, womens is 7.2 The number of times a person in a regular relationship has sex per year varies depending on what survey you believe in. The figure I've found have American down for anywhere between (on average) 118 to 132 times per year. I wonder if the writers took any of this into account for the series? Before you instantly say 'no', bear in mind that they did ... Test edit
