Starbucks Christmas Decorations

In the beginning

A couple of years ago, I used to go into the Starbucks that was right next door to where I worked on a daily basis, and I used to get a lot of comments from my colleagues that I was probably practically supporting the whole store just on my purchases.

Then at the beginning of November (2001) Starbucks got in the 'festive' mood, by selling Gingerbread and Eggnog Lattes, and serving them in nice red cardboard cups with snowflake decorations down the side.

I thought these were quite pretty, and so coupled with the fact of trying to get more for my money when buying ludicrously expensive Starbucks coffee's, I just hit upon the idea of collecting as many Starbucks cups as possible, and in true blue peter style, building a Christmas tree out of them.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the originally built Christmas tree which was in my office for about three weeks that year, but I thought it looked rather good.

So in 2002 when Christmas came round again I collected the red cups again, to make some decorations out of. Watch this space ...

18th December 2002

And thank you for checking back! You'll be pleased to know that I did finally make the effort of getting round to doing something with all the cups (132 in the end!) that I'd collected throughout November and December.

I have to say that I didn't want to make a full sized Christmas tree though - as I did that last year, and I wanted to make something different.

When I told people in the office at work about this though, some of them objected, and so to placate them I did make a mini 'two cup' Christmas tree which takes pride of place on my desk.

Anyway, for the rest -well it was a weekend job as it was going to take a few hours, so I came in at the weekend and spent a lot of time cutting up cups, gluing and stringing them together and making a sort of 'hanging basket' decoration out of them.

Note that the picture here with just my arms in did have me grinning at the camera, but in a kind of way that made me look a complete idiot (more than usual that it is), so I chopped myself off.

Once the 'hanging baskets' were done, I then strung some cups together and put some fairy lights inside them to create a chain of lanterns ... most impressive with the lights turned out in the office.

Finally, I cut up and strung together all the brown cup holders that I'd also collected and strung them all together to make some paper chains.

Subtle, but very effective I think.
