Christmas Lights

Bling, bling, merrily on High!

I first did this back in 2001, when I took pictures of bad Christmas decorations that people adorn the front of their houses with. I've been meaning to do it every year since, but never quite got round to it - until this year.

So the other evening, I went for a drive round my neighbourhood - near and far - to take pictures of some of the worst and even worst of Christmas lights stuck all over people's houses.

Oh, and I nicked that title from this BBC website article all about how people are going over the top on decorating their houses for christmas!

We started the tour in a place near to where I live - Ewell - and found two houses more or less next door to each other that were quite bad. I had considered linking a Streetmap.co.uk address to each location so that you could go and find them yourself if you wanted to, but I can't really be that bothered to be honest.

But we found this - quite bad, but we knew that there would be worse to come.

Chav Rating: 5 out of 10

This was neighbour to the house above in Ewell. Most of the lights were actually flashing adding to tackiness of it all, but of course this isn't reflected in the photo.

Chav Rating: Poor (4 out of 10 caps)

After Ewell, we headed one stop up the train line into London for the pleasant suburban surroundings of Stoneleigh.

Pleasant that is of course except for these illuminated monstrosities.

Chav Rating: Average (5 out of 10 caps)

I confess that this one doesn't look as bad as you might think, but the Santa Claus and sack were flashing, and whatever it is that is lit up on the right of the picture just looks like a erect penis to me.

Maybe that's just my warped mind though?

Chav Rating: Must try harder (3 out of 10 caps)

Now we're getting good! Reindeers climbing up the side of the rood, and some strange green thing that look like a bicycle on the front. And is that a white van I see parked in the driveway?

It is! They can have an extra cap for that then ...

Chav Rating: Interesting! (6 out of 10 caps)

This was bad because it was on a very prominent bend in a main road in Chessington (Chav-central near me) so you couldn't fail to miss this joint effort at you drove on past.

Chav Rating: Getting good! (8 out of 10 caps)

This house was the winner when I last did this back in 2001, as the whole front of the house is just covered in lights, although (sadly) I've got it from a bad angle here and some of the illuminations are obscured by ... by .. Oh! A Sierra! Classic .. but not as bad as the Escort XR3i that was parked next to it, and the Metro that was parked next to that!

Chav Rating: Excellent! (9 out of 10 caps)

And the winner is ...

This outstanding effort that we find back in Stoneleigh was this years out and out winner, mainly due to the fact that they'd appended an entire scaffold rig to the front of their house to allow them to add depth to the whole creation, including a complete 'Santas Grotto' that you can see beneath the two reindeer to the left of the picture.

Chav Rating: Outstanding !! (10 out of 10 caps, but 10 out 10 for effort too..)
