Review of the Year 2005 : Your votes please!
So here we go then boys and girls, it’s done, it’s here, and it’s available to download.
Actually, some lucky (!) people will be getting CD’s in the post from me – the equivalent of a christmas card from me this year, but if you’re not one of those, or you simply can’t be bothered to wait, then go here to download the thirteen tracks that make up Geoff’s annual Top 5 vote in the Review of the Year 2005.
Incidentaly, no one is allowed to vote for “Is this the way to Santa’s Grotto?“, which rather disturbingly is a cover of “… Amarillo” and has just come up on TV whilst I’ve been typing this.
It IS shockingly bad. Disturbingly so.
In fact, I’ve just got to go and change channels, ‘scuse me …
So … go and do the Top 5 thing then. There’s now a prize of a banana in the post to the 50th person to send me in their votes, plus a brucey-bonus if you can spot the deliberate (!) mistake in December, where I say the wrong word more than once. I’ve only just noticed this after burning up 60 CD’s. Shit!
17th December 2005
Hmm. July seems to be invoking quite personal emotions. Just had a friend text me to say that they were on the tube listening to the whole thing on their iPod when the seventh month popped up and they found it “incredibly moving”. In a horrible way, it will be the most memorable thing of 2005 really, won’t it?

After living in London for the first 33 years of my life and working for the
So for ten weeks in June, July and August 2009, I drove 20,000 miles around the the lower 48 contiguous states of the USA visiting towns and places that shared the same name as places on The London
If I’m not allowed to vote for Santa’s Grotto, then Blunt should also be excluded
Ian.
The voice of reason.
“The Voice of Reason” I like that. I may change my name by Deed Poll to include it.
Disappointed at the lack of Hot Pantz’s (I’d Like to) Give U One 4 Christmas on the CD, Geoff.
That’s a surefire Christmas no. 1 if ever there was one!
(Even if it DID fail to get anywhere last year…)
Hmm, inexplicably the Underground Masker is absent from this year’s Review…
And also, I thought that Razorlight ‘weren’t really [your] thing…’
Oh, I try to cover all tastes on ye olde CD. Razorlight (for Chris), Coldplay (for Ian), and Girls Aloud (just for me) … go on! download it if you haven’t already …
Now I have my PC put files in alphabetical order
Apr, Aug, Dec, Ending, Feb, Jan, Jul, Jun, Mar, May, Nov, Oct, Sep
Yorkie – Well if you’d get with the 21st century and go for the AAC ones, they’ve got the artwork, track numbers, album name and genre built right it! MP3? old hat! pah…
just rename them: 01 – January, 02 – February, etc.. etc..
Do you know Geoff? I worked that little 01 02 03 04 tip out for myself!!
I think Ian is secretly in love with Blunt and plays the video non-stop when his girlfriend leaves the house.
9: I don’t use iTunes. It hogs resources and I’ve no desire to buy music online.
Yorkie. How dare you criticise Apple! Don’t you know that their only interest is to save you. They’re not out to make money like other companies, and all their products should be instantly canonised and worshipped.
Are our top 5 votes supposed to remain a secret?
You could certainly discuss what tracks tickled your fancy during the year if you wanted. I can tell you that after the first lap, the Kaiser Cheifs seem to be quite popular…
Maybe Ian’s surname IS actually ‘blunt’, perhaps?
Can we have a list of them too please? *smiles sweetly*
OMG! Is this the Way to Santa’s Grotto is awesome!!!
It’s truly terrible isn’t it?
Kaiser Chiefs – “Riot”, and “Oh My..” both proving to be quite popular at the moment. But that James Blunt chap.. he’s catching up!
Actually, scratch the list comment.. *l* I’ve just dicovered the commentry *L*
Is this the way to Santa’s Grotto? – The Stuff Of Dreams…
You didn’t realise there was commentary? Oh yes! “Geoff does his DJ thing..” – lots of talking from me!
Who thinks Geoff should stick to his day job? *Raises his right hand*
On the contrary, having only got as far as April so far, I’ve been really enjoying it, and think that Geoff has a great voice for radio.
… and no, he didn’t bribe or pay me to say that.
I enjoyed Geoff talking. Particularly as he seems to have managed to find a set of records that *deserve* to be talked over.
I’d like to change my five.
I want to cancel them all, and then have 5 deducted from James Blunt’s total.
Geoff, go on… tell them about your talent for voice.
Yeah… trouble is, when *I* listen back to it, all I can hear are the bad edits and mistakes.
The Bravery edit at the beginning of March is really noticable, the “It’s tricky for me..” in December is clearly tagged on afterwards, and going into Girls Aloud in August is clearly a fudge up. And in a couple of place the levels on the music is too high, and on my voice – too low.
There, now I’ve done my usual trick of putting myself down about it.
Oh, and if you don’t get even slightly moved over July, then you’re not human…
If anyone votes for James Blunt, including aging Americans, then they must be named and shamed.
I don’t know about anyone else, but does Geoff’s voice have a Zane Lowe twang in certain places?
Who the hell is Zane Lowe?
Oh. Here.
Is that a compliment?
Yes, it is. He’s a good guy.
… and Ian, we get that you don’t like James Blunt, any chance of you giving it a rest now, it’s getting a wee bit repetetive. Each to their own eh?
Ok, I was kidding … Geoff does have a cool DJ type voice, very impressive! Geoff, how do you actually go about mixing all the tracks? Do you just use your PC, or do you have a mini desk too? And why do you think of all the good ideas, I have an idea, but … its too simular to yours, I dunno, I’ll mail you about it later at home
Rumor has it, he nips into one of the Radio One studios when on night shift and compiles the tracks
He’d have a job to do that, not in the same place I don’t think.
If you hadn’t noticed, I’m not the only blunt hater around here (Anthony, Chris, etc). Do you want to censor them too?
Is it just my opinion, or is anyone else not allowed to criticise it either?
Also, are there any other opinions you’d prefer not to read, Pixeldiva? Am I still allowed to criticise coldplay, where appropriate?
So if you can please post a list of all the phrases and opinions that you’d prefer not to read, that would helpful to me.
“Aging Americans!!??” Heheh.. Methinks Ian is going on Blunt overload –yet.. have you noticed him always the first to bring up Blunt? (#1)
I have just posted a darling photo of Blunt on my site in case anyone has not bought the CD, and has not seen the liner notes…
Geoff.. you artfully dodged the question about voiceover talent!! Should I tell them?
#34 – Ian, sounds to me like a case of someone who can dish it out, but can’t take it when it’s given back. Go and take a deep breath and get off your soapbox.
#31 – Yup, have got a 12 track Behringer mixer at home with a pukka microphone as well, etc… all goes in and out of my PC and hi-fi stack, etc… allowing semi-professional recording. Oh, and some decent digital editing software (in this case Soundforge) helps too!
#33 – I am indeed in Television Centre out at White City. Radio 1 is in a place called Yalding House just off Great Portland Street.
No answer to #35??
#35 – What, tell them that i’m /not/ a voiceover artist. Yeah, ok!
First James Blunt, now Zane Lowe is a “good guy”?! You’ll be telling me the world is flat next! What has got into everybody?!
Geoff, give me permission to really tell them!! C’mon.
I seriously am thinking these guys protesteth **just** a little too much about Blunt. The find him threatening because their GFs think he’s all that. Admit it!
Geoff this is your Mum, can you send me the CD for Xmas please? you wanted to
know what I wanted, so what more could a girl want than your wonderful CD of
top hits 2005.
I’m moving flats tomorrow, and will be off-line for 2 whole weeks, so won’t be
able to vote. How will I survive without reading your blog for so long?
P.S. Is there an Internet cafe in Redhill?
Merry Xmas to all Geoff’s readers, long may he continue.
When did *I* ever tell someone to shut up? (Well, I’m sure there have been occasions, feel free to dredge them up, but I don’t recall them). You’ll note I ignored your digs in this thread about coldplay and blunt
Geoff’s Mum: Merry Christmas! I hope your able-bodied son is going to help you move flats, or will you expect to be hearing that tired old “I would, but my back might give out” excuse?
PS. Congrats on the new grandson.
Geoff: Does your own mum know about the Hollywood voiceover stuff?
Ian: I made sure to give you some digs about Coldplay & Keane in my own comments, just so you wouldn’t feel slighted.
I’ve listened to it twice now *L* Its almost exactlty a one way commute long.
July made me cry in public.. the ending made my cry in public..
But I really liked it. I’ve chosen my top 3 songs, still wracking my brain for more.
Geoff’s Mum, I know someone in Redhill who I’m sure has to use an internet cafe whenever her PC goes on the blink (quite frequently). I shall make enquiries.
Crying in public is good. Crying is good. Why not? Got for it Fimb, and don’t ever be afraid to express your emotions.
#46 Wise advice from the Geoffmeister there!
So,
The JCB Song made number one then!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4540514.stm
Indeed. but will it be there next week for Xmas No.1 ?
and if you go and re-download December from the Review 2005 page, then i’ve re-recorded it so that I’ve prounounced their name properly !!
What about those of us who got the mailed copy? And will you hold off tallying the votes until I receive mine?
