I’m a legal alien, I’m an . . .
Twenty nine emotions to cover the last six months of my life:
Lonely. Wistful. Optimistic. Hopeful. Thoughtful. Excited. Organised. Busy. Lustful. Dreamy. Agitated. Frustrated. Bouyant. Happy. Sad. Scared. Frightened. Romantic. Aroused. Safe. Loved. Elated. Annoyed. Worried. Stressed. Calm. Passionate. Settled. Relaxed.
Welcome to America Geoff.
To Charleston, South Carolina to be precise.
Where I’ve only once so far looked the wrong way when crossing the road, only twice gone to get in the wrong side of the car when I’ve gone to drive, and have even managed to put on half a Kg in my first two days here already. Not bad.
So ‘Rate my accent‘. ‘Candy of the week‘, and the ‘Things that make it not seem like I’m 4,000 miles away from home‘, guide – and more, coming up over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, I’ve finished off doing my food & other stuff list of things that you just can’t get here, but I would really really like!
So if you ever want to send me anything, email me and ask me for my address, and I will glady receive all packages sent to me, in return perhaps for some American goodies.
And talking of where I now live …
Oh, and for those of you who didn’t get it, it’s a Sting song, natch, innit?

After living in London for the first 33 years of my life and working for the
So for ten weeks in June, July and August 2009, I drove 20,000 miles around the the lower 48 contiguous states of the USA visiting towns and places that shared the same name as places on The London
Geoff,
Best wishes for your new life! A while back I wanted to send some typically English food to my girlfriend in Greece and I used one of the ex-pat websites that supplies food. Took ages but apparently all was good.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Ex-pat+food&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
American bacon, if I remember, just isn’t the same as good old English/Danish.
Do you have work yet?
Ahh, finally a photo of the ellusive Leigh.
Good to hear your OK, Geoff. Can you get Fox’s Buscuits in the US?
Those 29 emotions are almost as revealing as the photograph.
Congratulations to you both.
Congratulations indeed and well done for arriving.
You look a lot more relaxed there than you did on Monday!
hope you’re setteling in ok, glad to here all is well, pity you’re not in florida, i know of at least 4 british stores there!
Looks good Geoff, missing you already! Your Blog to the right of
the photo says ‘What I do at the BBC’ [History now I think.]
What food would you like me to send you? BTW
I will updated, yes… “I used to work at the BBC”.
Have a look at my food list! And send me anything on it! Actually .. Yorkshire tea bags would be good at the moment. Tea is probably the most essential thing out of all of those.
Wow. I didn’t think people who hated marmite still existed.
Marmite is the devils sperm. Only more sticky and brown coloured. yuk yuk yuk!
the things people crave is strange.. my friends in Canada have me send HP sauce and tins of marrowfat peas.. the friend in Georgia desires PG Tips and twiglets.. and my cousin in Canada had me bring Curly Wurly’s *L*
I have to say, even though I was only in Thailand for 6 weeks, Ribena tasted like nectar when I got my hands on some!
marmite is evil!!!!!!!!
why don’t you try this?

if it’s anywhere near you
this page
http://www.south-carolina-real-estate.com/tourism/tea.html
also has a huge list of tearooms, i’m betting that like ours a few will have a shop attached, if not at least you can get a decent cup of tea!
Marmite tastes exceptional if you spread it thinly enough. Get it wrong and it will put you off for life.
I once designed a Marmite knife. I will post the design up soonish.
Pretty southern belle you got Geoff! I hope she can handle ya! Now you can experience HURRICANES!! LOL
Why didn’t you just pack all your fave food & toiletries when you went?
Note: Beans are not a good idea early in a relationship if you are still
trying to be romantic. Question: At what stage in a relationship is one allowed
to – er break wind, and your other half just laughs it off? 3months, 6months, never?
Marmite is very very very evil
oh and good luck Geoff and all the best over the pond
Congrats and Best Wishes
Congrats on your big move Geoff! Truly is amazing how you made the big jump over the pond. I look forward to reading of your adventures in the US of A. So close, you must pop up to Canada. Apparently we are nice people
all the best ‘over there’, keep the swimming trunks handy for the tropical storms!.
#20 – End of an era .. “End of an era!” – are you kidding? Don’t you realise how much NEW stuff i’m going to encounter here that I can prattle on about for pages and pages at a time?
Another regular commenters here (no names mentioned) also said to me the other day “Are you going to keep on blogging then?”, as if they thought that it would now all come to a end. Well DUH!
Let me see : New country, new people, new places, new experiences, umm.. YES, I think you’ll find that I’ll definetely be carrying on !!!
You can buy Yorkshire Tea on the ‘net for delivery all over the world: http://www.bettysbypost.com/
better get those little chicken sticks browned! sorry, sore point i know.
in kenya the kids loved singing that song – but adapted to ‘im an alien in mom-bas-aaa’, with a few swahili words that would make you blush…
Wow. It looks *so* Southern America at its finest. *green pangs of envy*
Welcome to America, Geoff. Don’t forget us now, y’hear?
I know you wanted to put on weight mate, but moving to the USA is taking it too far.
Never mind given their sugersize meals and mountains of coke will have like to rolly polly in no time.
Your going to miss your Spurs football – or soccer as you will have to call it now.
Take care, and do you remember the last time we watched the soccer world cup in the BBC bar, that penalty shootout . . . was heart breaking for us all . . . still we drank our body weight I am sure, and mine and your case thats not hard.
#25 ..Miss Spurs? – Like you’d miss food-poisoning! 2-1, nuff said.
Probably not a good time to talk to Geoff about football, especially if you’re a gooner. Happy St. Totteringham’s Day Geoff!! The latest it’s been for many a long year!
#9 – really there’s no call for that kind of image. Restrain yourself! Also on your list of stuff you miss… Dr Who. Last night’s ep was a cracker!!
I’m not talking about the football!
Well ok, except to that …
I can’t watch the BBC ‘Score’ interactive video stream here – “This service is available only for UK users”
Trying to stream Radio 5 Live – “Due to contractual reasons, we are unable to bring you this programme”
I had to settle for going to http://www.talksport.co.uk and using their ‘listen now’ feature instead, whilst F5′ing the latest premership scores.
All this of course was between 10am and midday in the morning for me whilst I’m still sitting round in my pants!
Then, just to rub it in – I went and bought a bike this afternoon, and because I’m a “must have now” kinda person, I had to settle for one in my size (21″ frame) that was Red and White in colour. (Ars*nal colours, y’see?)
At least I’ve now since found a bar where I can watch them lose live in the Champions League final. (But again, at something bizarre like 2.45pm in the afternoon…)
Great post, great photo. What a lovely Southern building and a lovely Southern lady too. Congrats to both of you and hope to see you on the beach in Hawaii soon…
P.S. I went back to Targé again today.
Congratulations, Geoff! And some day we’ll finish moving about all the stuff you’ve left behind.
Fimb, where do your friends live? I was always able to get HP Sauce in my local supermarket in Canada.
Champions League final, huh… What’s the difference between a squirrel and tottenham…?
Are you going to, if you don’t already, watch American football?
Congrats Geoff … best of luck with everything – may well be coming over for a week or 2 later in the year and am not too far from where you are .. so can bring stuff for ya if you fancy a meet up ..!!
Also glad to hear i am not the only Arsenal hater … i keep bbeing told off for not supporting the English team .. can you really call them that ..?! C’mon Barcelona is what I say ..!!
Happy to see you settling in.
2:45 is not so bad.
We’ve an Irish pub here that opens at 5:00 a.m. during sports finals due to the time differences where some matches are played.
First impressions as a resident?
First impressions…? See my later blog post (comin’ up).
Miles – “Girl in the fireplace”, best epsiode of the new series so far, yes! God bless P2P bit torrents. *cough*
It rained here yesterday – a LOT. Humidity built up all day, and at 3.45pm exactly when the forecast said it would, it started spitting, and was then quite soon coming down quite hard and fast. A couple of the roads had deep semi-flooded areas on them – it looked cool seeing all the SUVs splashing up as they drove through them.
One thing that is weird though, the rain is WARM. not COLD! Oh hang on, i’ll have that for my imminent post…
Geoff, hope you don’t mind me posting a link, but if you truely are missing British radio, well try having a look at:
http://www.dxtuners.com/
Its a friendly co-op of global radios available over the internet and I was added to their number recently. It costs if you aren’t a site operator, but you get alot to play with. The Swedish founder of the system was greatly excited by the FM coverage I get over London, and I hope to improve it soon.
Yeah but I started reading the london tube stuff on here first!! No london tube over there now is there ?!!
Not quite sure on the “devil’s sperm – only sticky and brown coloured” analogy. “Devil’s poo” would be more apt
But I must say Vegemite kicks the very arse of Marmite, and it sickens me to hear people talking about it as a cheap and inferior imitation.
