It’s raining in Charleston, can I borrow an umbrella?
A 14 year old kid who leaves comments on the YouTube video for “Umbrella”, such as:
“This vid is AWESOME!!
:)!! IT ROCKS!!”
“rock on rhianna. good girl gone bad!!”
“only the ella ella ella parts good”
A cool, hip, trendy ‘dude’ who drives a car downtown with this song playing very loudly pumping out of sound system that cost more than the car itself.
- Mainly because I’m not cool, hip or trendy.
- Nor a car owner.
Things I am:
- 34 years old
- Someone who admits to liking light, fluffy pop songs, and not generally things with ‘Featuring Jay-Z’ in the title.
So once more I find myself eschewing the logic of my music tastes and the dictation of the process, when I discover this Rihanna song and have to play it on loop for a fair bit, because that’s how much I like it.
NB:
• Leigh has just walked out of the room (and taken her laptop with her) whilst I’ve been typing this. Oops, but fair call, I have just played it four times in a row since getting in a few minute ago. Sorry dear.
• Oddly, it’s number one in the UK right now as well us the USA. And that doesn’t happen very often. In fact – I bet no one can tell me when the last time was that the top-of-the-charts single was the same both sides of the pond.

After living in London for the first 33 years of my life and working for the
So for ten weeks in June, July and August 2009, I drove 20,000 miles around the the lower 48 contiguous states of the USA visiting towns and places that shared the same name as places on The London
Was it Candle in the Wind (1997) or is it more recent?
was the pizza worth it and did you return the umbrella?
I’m a big fan of yours, Will Mellor.
I like this song too, cant get it out of my head. They even play it on BBC Radio 2,
the ‘oldies’ station.
When LL Cool J reached No.8 in the UK charts in September 1987 with “I need love”, it ALSO peaked at No. 8 in the US charts in the same week at the same time.
I’ll get my coat…
Anne – We couldn’t cross King Street, there was three inches of water that I couldn’t wade through, so no!
I’m still checking on the #1 thing … hmm …
oh, and i’m playing it again.
where’s Ian when you need him to slag of my musical tastes?
Ah!
Here
I keep listening to a Genesis cover at the moment – Keept it Dark by Simon collins (Phil’s Son)
anybody heard it – Keep it Dark
Ian
Oh god. I was in Germany when “I need love” was number 1 there. My amour of the time bought me the single.. He’s now a fancy pants D&B DJ
Thanks for that link Ian – I “collect” cover versions and thats a kinda cool one!
I hate that song with a passion.
Was it Gnarls Barkley last year with Crazy?
So I’m wrong then! Darn it! Well, it was just a guess!
I am addicted to the song too and have been playing it in my car quite loud!

Geoff talks iPod
For once Geoff is lost for words – don’t bother counting the passes on the basketball thing, count the number of times Geoff stammers or says “um” or “er”!
Of course you are…!
Which is why you need to hear it here
(Taken from Chris Moyles this morning)
think the Beatles managed a US & Uk No. 1 & I think Lennon did it also under his own auspices
Since then ?
dunno ?
Osmonds ?
(please let that be wrong)

I actually heard that song for the first time in a club the otehr night. Im sooo far behind in music i am constantly stood there going what is this?? But it surprisngly wasnt that bad. What made it more funny was that some girls decided to put their umbrellas up in the club on a very crowded dancefloor.
>some girls decided to put their umbrellas up in the club on a very crowded dancefloor
you see now THAT’S funny!
remember the days of James “sit down”, when it came on in a club, and everyone woudl, er… well – sit down! ok, so it was funny once, but worth doing.
So what was the last concurrent number one?
Er.. see #7 !
[...] random thoughts! Geoff is not the only Englishman infatuated with Rihanna’s umbrella… [...]
