Statistics : USA
I sort of can’t believe I haven’t got around to doing this sooner, so it’s about time.
If you’ve been clicking through to the daily updated Google Map on the right hand side over there you’ll have been able to see the route I’ve taken each day, the same-name places I’ve stopped at and exactly where and when I’ve filled up with gas/petrol.
It’s that last one which has caused no end of fun with the statistics for me, as I’ve got a spreadsheet detailing exactly how much this is costing me all in terms of the car, eating, and accomodation. And so I thought I’d share some of this with you here.
Travelling:
Days on the road: 25 / Miles driven: 5,563 / Average miles per day: 222
States:
Been through: 24 states / Visited: 21 ‘same name’ towns that share tube stop names
Gas/Petrol:
Total gallons: 311 / Total spent: $798 / Gas Mileage (MPG): 18.98
Most expensive: $2.74 (Maine) / Cheapest: $2.39 (South Carolina)
Accommodation:
Campground: 7 / Stayed at friends: 12 / Stayed at hotel/motel: 5 / Money spent: $501
Starbucks vs. Dunkin Donuts
I’ve given ‘The Man’ in the form of the Seattle based caffeine company just 8 times in 25 days. DD only 4 times.
Miscellaneous
My weight remains constant at 172 lbs despite eating far too much bad-trip-food. I thought I might get fatter. Maybe I need to go into more Waffle Houses.
I’ve stopped counting roadkill because I see so much. I’ve still only heard the Eagles “Hotel California” on the local radio stations three times, but I have yet to hit the west & mid-west so expect that one to rise …
If you can think of anything else that I could/should be logging, feel free to suggest!

After living in London for the first 33 years of my life and working for the
So for ten weeks in June, July and August 2009, I drove 20,000 miles around the the lower 48 contiguous states of the USA visiting towns and places that shared the same name as places on The London
The mini-map of the USA there with the yellow pins in it is a Facebook application called “Cities I’ve visited”, where you get to place a pin once you’ve been to a place. I look at mine and I think:
i. Yay! look at all those places I’ve been to!
Followed by:
ii. Shit! I’ve been on the road for ages, and I’ve only done about a quarter of the USA… so much more to go …
Beverages served at State Welcome Centers
World’s Largest items seen

How do you update the Google Map? Is it manual upload to Google Maps every day, or do you have some kind of cunning GPS auto updates google maps feature?
