Winning and Losing 2009

37Once more, it’s 365 days since I could last say “It’s my birthday”, which means I do this:

Birthdays are often the time to take stock of ones lot. And I like to look back on my birthday on the pluses and minuses of the last twelve months – and compile a little life balance sheet just to see whether I’m still making progress or not. So here’s a quick catch up on everything since August of 2008.

1. Lost: My ability to pronounce “t”‘s in my words. Instead of saying ‘compuTer’, ‘phoTo’, and ‘tesTing’ – I say ‘compuDer’, ‘phoDo’ and ‘tesDing’. Damn acclimation to the American way of speaking, three+ years and you eventually wore me down.

2. Gained: Weight. Yeah I say that every year, but what with me being on a roadtrip ‘n’ all, oh hang on … did someone mention ‘roadtrip’ !?

3. Gained: About 48 states. Ironically at the time of typing there is only one mainland state – Arizona – (the other being Hawaii) that I haven’t properly ‘been to’ in my life. But all that will change tomorrow, just in time for me to blog about it as well.

4. Gained: The complete ability to work out who are, and who aren’t my friends. It’s an incredibly simply formula once you’ve cracked it.

5. Gained: The ability to see past a failed marriage. I wasn’t doing that this time last year. Twelves months on, things are oh so improved 🙂

6. Lost: Certain physical objects which I shall never get back, but that’s ok because …

7. Gained: … I realise that physical objects aren’t everything in your life. No one can steal your memories, can they?

8. Gained: More video editing and video graphics skills. Oh sssh, let me have one geek thing, ok? I continue to improve my photography skills too and take better pics too, neat.

9. Gained: Red hair. But it’s fading now, dammit. What colour shall I have next?

10. I can never think of a tenth thing. Look back at the previous years, I always skip on the tenth thing, I’m such a cop-out. Sorry.

And this, is me – in the middle of typing out this blog post on the morning of my 37th.

Happy Birthday to me.

Hope you have a great birthday, knowing that you’ve nearly completed your goal. You’ve already been to more U.S. states than I have, albeit in an extreme manner. Enjoy Arizona and California – they both have fantastic sights to see.

I’ve lived here my entire life (51 years), and I still have 4 states to go – Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, and Delaware. I already have the difficult ones (Alaska and Hawaii) out of the way, but they were the most fun.

    Happy birthday, man!

Have fun with your driving today, but make sure Paul is behind the wheel when you imbibe on some local brew of potency.

Gained – No. 10, you have gained a mum who can now drive on the ‘other’ side of the road, thanks to you, I never thought I would do it. Blame the man who snored in the tent, you had no sleep and I had to drive! : )

Happy Birthday – I’m sending your present tomorrow; hope it gets there before you!
