19. A haircut? I’ll have a No.66 please
I felt like my hair was getting long and that it was time to get it chopped. And when you’re in Arizona on the Route 66 trail, there’s only one place that you can go …
Unfortunately Angel Delgadillo was out when we went by the Route 66 Gift Shop in Seligman, Arizona … but that didn’t stop us having some fun, to the sound of Depeche Mode’s version of the Bobby Troup classic.

After living in London for the first 33 years of my life and working for the
So for ten weeks in June, July and August 2009, I drove 20,000 miles around the the lower 48 contiguous states of the USA visiting towns and places that shared the same name as places on The London
One noticeable error … it’s actually called ‘The Snow Cap’, and not ‘The Snow Drop’ !! no idea what i’m talking about, obviously …
I thought you would get a haircut there and we could watch, I’m disappointed! Good fun place though.
And now we can add music video producer to your long list of roles as well – a great version of the song which I’d never heard before – and there’s a bit of the Dave Gahan about your look too… I’m going to be visiting Seligman no doubt when I get to Arizona in 6 weeks time, so this is a great taster for me. PS How long did it take me to finally join the blogging world?
@jonny, is that the first time you’ve ever left a comment on a blog then? wow. the version is by Depeche Mode yeah, surprised you didn’t know it! AZ is a great great state. dry, dusty & deserty – but one of my favourites, for sure.
My first comment since I discovered your great blog, Geoff… *Loved* the Depeche Mode! (But why didn’t you get your hair cut?)
oh, because the dude (Angel) that does it is a very old! (like, in his eighties) and he doesn’t work a full day anymore, he likes to take it easy now and then! so when i got there (at about 1pm) he’d already turned in for the day.
his name is Angel, and he’s spent the last 20 years campaigning and working on the whole Historic Route 66 thing, so he’s become a little “famous” himself for reviving the whole things and saving certain towns – such as his own of Seligman.
i’ve got to drive BACK east to Charleton thought next week. i was thinking of popping in again on the way back!!
Geoff, I have been following you on Twitter mostly and have a lot to catch up on here. Fantastic trip mate, please put t’s back into your words and keep up the great work. Did you visit the Roadkill Cafe in Seligman?
i am sorely missing the T’s myself. being with Paul (a Lancashire lad) for two weeks has sort of helped, but unforTunaTely those pesky Americans are wearing me down, yes
@Geoff: you mean “unforTCHunUDly,” right?
Wow, my best buddy and I spent two weeks this june travelling Route 66 along its length. I’m not ashamed to admit that this video has bought a bit of a tear to my eye- best. Holiday. Ever.
