Sampled Hits

After blogging a lot of tunes for people where I wanted to point out what songs had been sampled from an original, I thought I'd make a complete list of the them, and put up some sounds clips too.

I'm not including songs here where are very obvious reworkings of the original, to the point where they credit the original artist song. e.g. Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony "Home" (based on Phil Collins "Take me home") credited Phil Collins, and even had him miming in the video!

If you can think of any other good ones that should appear below then let me know and I'll add them in!

2006

Supermode had a hit with "Tell me why", completely based upon the 1984 Bronski Beat hit "Smalltown Boy".

Hi_Tack had a hit with "Say say say (Waiting 4U)", which is a stolen lyric and sampled from the Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney hit "Say say say" - a number two hit in 1983.

Did you know that the Abba songwriters - Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson - have only ever let TWO songs from their entire back catalogue be used as a sample for a modern day song. The first (not listed below), is the Fugees song "Rumble in the jungle" which nicked a bit of the classic 'Name of the game'.

The second is this one .. in which Madonna has to reportedly send a very nice almost begging style letter asking them if she could use it for her anthemic 2005 dance classic. They eventually agreed, and it's a damn fine song! Thus 'Hung up' samples the fantastic 'Gimme Gimme Gimme' from the ultimate Swedish pop band.

Maddona - Hung up    Abba - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!

Beatfreaks - Somebody's Watching Me (samples Rockwell song of same name)
Sunset Strippers - Falling Stars (a.k.a. 'waiting for a star to fall')
Mylo - Doctor Pressure (samples Miami Sound Machine - Dr Beat)

2005

Mylo had a No. 13 hit with "In your arms", which samples the main hook out of the 1981 hit "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes, it also uses a bit of Boy Meets Girls' 1988 hit "Waiting For A Star To Fall" as well, which actually the Sunset Strippers did a complete cover version of this year too!

Mylo - In my arms

Bette David Eyes   Waiting for a star to fall

Eric Prydz "Call on me"
is a blatant lift from Steve Winwoods 1987 hit "Valerie"

Eric Prydz - Call on me       Steve Winwood - Valerie

2004

One of my favourite tunes of the year - LMC's "Take me to the clouds above" stole TWO songs for it's sample! U2's "With out without you" and Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know?".

LMC - Take me to the clouds above

U2 - With or without you     Whitney Houston - How will I know?

Goldie Lookin' Chains "Your mothers got a penis" samples Eric Claption "Behind the mask"

GLC - Your mothers got a penis       Eric Clapton - Behind the mask

Marios Winas "I don't wanna know" uses Enya's "Bodaceia", but was not the first song to do so, as the Fugees already used the sample back in 1996 with "Ready or not".

2003

Eminem "Sing for the moment" blantanly rips the Aerosmith song 'Dream On'

2002

The Milky hit "Just the way you are" is a sample from a little know song called "Streets of your town" by the Go Betweens.

Mikly - Just the way you are       Go Betweens - Streets of your town

The Sugababes "Freak like me" is a steal on Gary Numan's/Tubeway Army's "Are friends electric?" - A number one in 1979. The lyrics are from Adina Howard's Freak Like Me (UK no.33 / US no.2, 1995). Based on a bootleg which mixed the two originals.

2001

MOP's "Cold as ice" nicked a whole bunch of stuff from the less-than-fashionable 1978 Foreginer hit of the same name.

2000

Robbie Williams "Rock DJ" is a pastiche of so many songs, but most people don't know that the main rhythm behind the whole song is blatantly lifted from a Barry White track called "It's Ecstacy lying here next to you".

Robbie Williams - Rock DJ      Barry White - It's Ecstacy...

Armand Van Helden "Koochy", is obviously nicked from Gary Numans "Cars".

Eminem had a hit with 'Stan' famously stealing a sample from the Dido song "Thank you". Some argue that it thanks to the Eminem single being such a big hit, that it then thrust the Dido album into the spotlight. Dido also (rather cooly) appeared in the video for the 'Stan' single.

1998

Deetah's "Relax" was a pure and simple sample nick from the Dire Straights album track "Why Worry"

Deetah - Relax      Dire Straights - Why Worry

1997

It even took me a little while to realise it when it first came out, but the super-summer hit "Sunchyme" by Dario G, nicked a sample - and speeded it up somewhat - from the 1985 Dream Academy hit "Life in a Northern Town"

Dario G - Sunchyme   Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town

Later in the year Puff Daddy sampled the Police's "Every breath you take" (from 1983) to make "I'll be missing you" - instended as a tribute to fellow rapper Notorious B.I.G. who was shot dead in Los Angeles that year - but bizarrely it got played on UK radio a lot around the time of Princess Diana's death, and many people took it to be a memorable tribute song towards her instead!

1996

Kaleef's hit "Golden Brown" re-worked the 1982 classic of the same name by the Stranglers

Kaleef - Golden Brown   Strangers - Golden Brown

1995

Elastica's "Waking up" is a direct rip-off of "No more heroes" by The Stranglers.

1994

Warren G & Nate Dog's hit "Regulate", lifted a sample from Michael McDonalds "I keep forgetting"

Warren G - Regulate   Michael McDonald - I keep forgetting

1993

SWV's "Right here" was completely sampled from the Michael Jackson song "Human Nature" - on the multi-million selling 'Thriller' album.

1991

PM Dawn's "Set adrift on memory bliss" is a sample of the 1983 No.1 song "True" by Spandau Ballet.

PM Dawn - Set adrift on memory bliss  Spandau Ballet - True

A Tribe Called Quest had a hit with "Can I kick it?", which was a sampled nicked from Lou Reeds classic "Walk on the wild side"

Tribe called Quest - Can I kick it?   Lou Reed - Walk on the wild side

Beat International's "Dub be good to me", is a complete lift of the classic "Guns of Brixton" by The Clash.

Twenty four Seven's "I can't stand it" steals the bass line from the classic Kraftwerk tune "The Robots".
