Zone 1 Challenges

'Zone1' only challenge 2008

In 2008, I was living 4,000 miles away from the London Underground in the USA. But Neil & me came up with the crazy plan that I would fly over just to take part in this years challenge - which I did! And I made a rather good video about it...

A full write up will appear here shortly. It took place on Friday May 30th.

The 'Zone1' only challenge 2004

The write up of the Zone 1 2004 Challenge is here.

This is the original challenge organised by Ewan Spence and which BBC London recorded for the news that night.

The Zone 1 challenge first started in 2004 ...

Wanting 'one last crazy thing to do before he left London to return to Scotland', the original Zone 1 challenge was organised by Ewan Spence in 2004. He got in touch with Geoff & Neil to drum up some support - which we did, and we had about 15 people taking part on the day.

We all started at the same place though - Vauxhall, with a finishing point being anywhere you liked. BBC London got wind of this and sent down a cameraman for this piece here that was on the local news that night.

In 2005 it got bigger, with a pukka trophy being awarded, people travelling from far and wide to take part - and the winners being those nice chaps who came all the way from Sweden to participate!

In 2006, it grew bigger again with more people and more teams than ever taking part, and thus established a proper annual event with again Zone 1 challenges taking place in 2007 and 2008.

Offical times for the Zone1 challenge

1) 2 hours, 43 minutes, 50 seconds : John Stark. Set on the Zone 1 2007 challenge.

2) 2 hours, 44 minutes, 21 seconds : 'UefaCup' John

3) 2 hours, 45 minutes, 11 seconds : Ric Brackenbury.

Set on 11th April 2005. Starting at Vauxhall and ending at Euston, and by his own admission "Had a great run with some excellent connections!". It included an unplanned run from Earl's Court to High Street Kensington - a interesting move, that we don't think anyone else has done before!

We can only assume that he just missed a District Line train and decided that it would be quicker to go on foot and hope to catch a Circle Line train rather than wait for the next District.
